Psychodynamic Counselling

Psychodynamic Counselling seeks to enable clients to access their true feelings, so that they can experience and understand them. It uses the basic assumption that everyone has an unconscious mind, that feelings held there are often too painful to be faced, and that we create defences to protect us from these painful emotions. Psychodynamic therapy assumes that these defences are causing distress to the individual, and it seeks to make sense of them in order to make the feelings less painful, sometimes using material from the client's dreams, fantasies and imagination. It takes as its roots the work of Freud and Jung.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a psychotherapeutic approach that addresses behavioural problems through a number of goal-oriented, systematic procedures. Most therapists working with patients that are dealing with anxiety and depression use a blend of cognitive and behavioural therapy. CBT is 'problem-focused' and 'action-oriented'; the therapist seeks to assist the client in selecting strategies to help address the problems. It can be extremely effective in helping people to deal with a variety of conditions.

Supervision

Supervision is a valuable and necessary element of counselling practice that is required to be undertaken regularly by all counselling practioners and therapists, in accordance with BACP guidelines. Marian provides counselling supervision and mentoring to trainee counsellors, counsellors in private practice, and health professionals.
