Frequently Asked Questions

I hope that these sample questions and answers will offer some clarification on the counselling process. However, if there is something that is not answered here, I will be happy to discuss it either by email or on the telephone with you.

If I attend a first session of counselling, do I have to commit to continuing each week for a specified period of time?

No. Clients can come for an assessment and then decide whether they want to continue or not. Sometimes people find it helpful just to come once to offload worries and concerns. In the same way, if several sessions have taken place and then the client decides that it is either too painful to continue, or not appropriate due to other pressures in their lives, or for financial reasons, it is perfectly acceptable for the counselling to end.

Can I be sure that I will be talking in complete confidence?

Yes, the material discussed stays in the counselling room and client identities are always protected. However, during supervision sessions, certain issues, especially of a particularly serious or sensitive nature, may be raised with the supervisor, but names are never divulged.

Will the counsellor tell me what to do?

No, not directly. This type of counselling or therapy seeks to provide facilitation for self-development and empowerment. Of course, ideas can be exchanged between client and counsellor, as the counsellor's role is necessarily an interactive one.

Do I  have to be prepared to go back over my past and early relationships?

No. It can be very helpful to look back but the counselling will be conducted according to the needs, wishes, and comfort of the client and, therefore, we will only pursue this route of working if it is deemed by both parties to be useful and acceptable.
